Judy Benjamin has finally reached the Atlantic, and on Saturday, November 15, dipped her toes into the water on Florida’s St. Augustine Beach. During her walk, she met hundreds of people across America, all curious about what that woman in a bright yellow safety vest, shaded under a red umbrella, walking alone on the side of the road, was doing. This gave her the chance to let them know that something can be done to prevent and reverse cognitive decline.

She crossed eight states: California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and stepped into Georgia before ending up in the historic town of St. Augustine, Florida, after walking over 2800 miles. Among the countless historical and unique cities Judy crossed through, historic St. Augustine was founded by Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565, making it the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the United States. Judy will now take a well-deserved rest and head back to her family and cats. We will hear more from Judy about her momentous walk across America soon, so stay tuned here.

Why at Age 81 and Recovered from Alzheimer’s I have Decided to Walk from Coast to Coast Across the USA

by Judy Benjamin (Patient Zero)

I was the first patient of the research neurologist who helped many Alzheimer’s survivors reverse their symptoms of the disease, Dr. Dale Bredesen. He calls me “Patient Zero.” And now, I’ve begun a new journey.

I am walking across the United States, from the Pacific to the Atlantic, from San Diego, California to St. Augustine, Florida — over 200 days and nearly 3,000 miles dedicated to bringing my personal recovery story to millions of Alzheimer’s sufferers and their supporters.

Thirteen years ago, I lost my way when I drove. I couldn’t remember my own phone number. I stumbled whenever I tried to recall my grandchildren’s names. I was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at a time when I had recently lost my mother, who died of Alzheimer’s after suffering for twenty years with the disease. I was devastated and in a state of despair.

Today all that has changed. I have regained my mental faculties.

At age 81, I’m dedicating the rest of my life to helping others do the same: To bring hope and awareness to the millions suffering from the disease today, I am walking across the USA. I’m delighted that, for the first six miles of the walk I was accompanied by Dr. Bredesen himself, along with friends, well-wishers and other Alzheimer’s survivors.

I am Patient Zero, and I will be forever grateful for the Bredesen Protocol that brought me back to wellness. But that’s just the beginning of the story.  I want to soon introduce you to Patient One, Patient Two, Patient Three and many more, including those that have already demonstrated significant improvements in their cognitive abilities by participating in Dr. Bredesen’s clinical trials, the results of which will soon be published..

Sadly, very few people know about this, and that’s what I hope to change in a big way by the time my walk ends.
